In 2018 we are excited to be doing two expeditions through National Geographic Open Explorer. We will be restarting our project on Bioluminescence in New England and beginning a new project to document all known and newly discover petroglyphs and inscriptions in the northeast. In 2014 we had started called, “Bioluminescence in New England.” The mission was to search for the eight bioluminescent plants and animals that can be found in New England. Unfortunately, due to another project, we had to put it on hold. This year we will pick up where we left off, and hunt down where they are hidden in the ocean, forests. mountains and valleys of the northeast. We hope to reveal the secrets of these amazing creatures and photograph them in their natural setting.

This year we have begun a project called, “Stories in Stone – Mysterious Petroglyphs and Inscriptions in the Northeast.” Over the 25 years of exploring the northeast, we’ve encountered petroglyphs and post-European settlement Inscriptions. Though some are still part of the popular culture, most have been lost to the deep forest of New England. There are many interesting interpretation for some of the known inscriptions in the northeast. While others are still somewhat of a mystery. We hope to catalog these fascinating pieces of New England history, and shed some light on the stories and history behind them.

Though we’ll be posting stories on our blogs and FB concerning the major landmarks in our expeditions, at National Geographic OpenExplorer we will be reporting the many details of our day to day activities in the Dirt lab and out in the field. We hope you’ll join us on this fascinating journey of discovery!
